Informed by a deep knowledge and love for the world of 1970's rock ’n’ roll, Jess Rotter was first inspired by her father’s vinyl covers and comic books growing up in New York.
Now based in Los Angeles, Rotter’s intricate hand-drawn psychedelic illustrations have appeared on everything including public murals, album + book covers, newspapers, and a whole lot of tee shirts. She describes her early aesthetic influences as, “part Peter Max, part Fritz the Cat.”
Jess has collaborated artistically with everyone from Parker Posey to Questlove to Lena Dunham to SF Giants to Jack White’s Third Man Records, as well as creating official band merchandise for acts such as the Grateful Dead, Yusuf/Cat Stevens, Nirvana/Kurt Cobain, Sly Stone, Rodriguez, Harry Nilsson, Courtney Barnett, Big Star, Mavis Staples,Kurt Vile, and more. Jess is Co-writer and Art Director on the animated feature film, Foxy Trotter, currently in development and produced by Natalie Portman and Titmouse Studios.
Rotter’s own book, I’m Bored, is part art book, part comic book compilation. Designed by the artist and with a foreword/toast by Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte, which received accolades from Vogue, Hollywood Reporter, LA Weekly, NY Magazine, and many more. Rotter's variety show of drawings are filled with recurring characters ranging from walruses, rock portraiture, wizards, and life warriors-all trying to seek their daily salvation. Rotter has illustrated two covers in 2019 for The Washington Post and has done creative lectures for NBC/Universal and for Apple’s Today series.
